Land Grant Films is seeking a student producer to help lead a 4-part microdoc series about the burdens people face due to energy insecurity. The selected student will be supported with a scholarship and will be an integral part of the production team.

The Land Grant Films crew shoots an interview for The Library That Dolly Built, a documentary about Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Each of the three to five-minute videos will cover a different aspect of the struggles individuals encounter due to energy burdens, including:

  1. the overall hardship and human suffering related to energy inefficient housing and the potential life changing benefits of weatherization programs
  2. the trade-offs that households are often forced to make between paying energy bills or paying for food, medications and healthcare, travel and/or socializing
  3. the health effects associated with indoor environmental quality issues, such as asthma
  4. the physical and mental benefits associated with thermal comfort

This project will be produced in association with Three3 (three cubed), a local non-profit that works in communities across the state to examine the benefits of weatherization projects, such as the TVA’s Extreme Energy Makeover program.

While the project will be led by Land Grant Films director and JEM associate professor, Nick Geidner, the student producer will have creative influence in all aspects of the production.

The selected student will be responsible for:

  1. working with Three3 to review and choose subjects
  2. creating preproduction documentation (e.g., shooting scripts, interview questions and shot sheets)
  3. handling logistics for field shoots
  4. transcribing and logging footage
  5. writing edit scripts and interfacing with editors
  6. completing other tasks as needed

A production schedule has not yet been created, but, due to travel and other logistical issues, it is likely that production cycle will run through summer and in to the fall semester.

To apply:

This opportunity is open to all UT-Knoxville students who are currently enrolled full time and plan to maintain full-time status in fall 2019.

Please email the following to Prof. Nick Geidner (ngeidner@utk.edu) by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6th:

  1. Cover letter explaining why you should be selected for the position and why you find energy insecurity to be an important topic
  2. Current resume
  3. Links to any relevant work samples
  4. The name and contact information for at least one UT faculty member who could serve as a reference
